The rise of Jamaican artist Shenseea (Chinsea Lee) is a powerful testament to the power of relentless drive. She has transformed from a single mother facing poverty to a globally recognized star with an estimated net worth of $8 million.
However, her success story is marked by personal sacrifice and complex relationships with her home audience.
From Classism to a Creative Spark
Born in Spanishtown, Jamaica, Shenseea’s early life was defined by struggle and classism. Raised in a strict Christian household where dancehall music was forbidden, she grew up wearing hand-me-down clothes from the children of wealthy families her mother worked for as a domestic helper. Her mother worked away from home, forcing Shenseea to be primarily raised by her aunt.
After dropping out of college due to financial problems, her life changed forever in November 2015 when she gave birth to her son, Rajgerro. At that time, she literally had only $1,000 USD in her bank account.
This desperation, coupled with her love for her newborn son, became the fuel for her musical ambition. She spent sleepless nights writing her first songs, transforming her role as a mother into her creative workshop.
The Humiliation of the Hustle
To make ends meet, Shenseea worked as a promotional girl, enduring terrible treatment from agencies—including once being left stranded at 3 a.m. in a dangerous area.
She later switched to Romage Major’s agency, which treated its team like family. Romage discovered her talent through her social media covers and soon became her manager.
Despite recording her first official song, “Jiggle Jiggle,” and gaining local radio play, Shenseea’s hustle continued. In a stunning display of humility, she was still working as a bottle service girl at Dream Weekend, literally serving drinks to other artists while her own song played in the background—and nobody knew it was her.
International Success and Personal Loss

Shenseea’s work ethic is legendary. She stated clearly that the only thing she puts before her career is her son, once leaving a boyfriend because he was distracting her with too many calls while she was in the studio. Her honesty has also defined her music, writing the hit “Side Chick” about a real-life situation.
Her determination paid off, leading to international collaborations with major artists like Kanye West on his Donda album, and features with 21 Savage, Megan Thee Stallion, and Offset. These moves, along with brand partnerships with Pepsi and Reebok, have secured her financial empire.
However, success came with personal loss. While building her career, her mother passed away, creating immense emotional grief for the artist who had only recently re-established a strong relationship with her after years of separation.
The Backlash from Home
Despite her global success, Shenseea continues to face intense criticism from her Jamaican fan base. Recently, a tweet she posted about a popular tourism phrase sparked a brutal response from local fans, who accused her of “jumping on every hit song for remixing” and suggested she was abandoning her cultural roots by evolving her sound for a global audience.
Shenseea, however, has learned to separate constructive criticism from “bad mind” (jealousy), recognizing that any attention drives engagement and focusing on her trajectory.
The transformation from a young woman sleeping on couches and dealing with classism to a multi-millionaire artist proves that her single-minded focus and extraordinary work ethic have allowed her to conquer an industry that often discards talent after the first setback.
